Decoding Ford Part Numbers

How to read a Ford Part Number

One thing that is important to understand is how to decode a Ford part number. Early part numbers had two parts and later i.e. mid 50’s were split into three parts. The first part or prefix of the number can have 2, 3, or 4 letters/numbers. This prefix is referred to as the year code. The middle set of numbers is known as the base. This refers to the application, such as brakes, engine, windows etc. The base or application number is divided into two categories.  They are chassis and body. Parts in the body section have the body style as the first to digits.  For instance if you have a two door hard top the base for that part number will have either 62 or 65. A convertible will have 76 and a wagon will have 71.  The third part of the number is the suffix and is used to recognize design changes.

Our search system has been designed to recognize the complete part number the year code and the base. Using the year code is a quick way to search out the exact parts that are available for the year car or truck you are working on. It is also highly recommended that you purchase one of the CD’s that is available which covers the car or truck you are working on.

As a footnote we have tried our best to insure the information below is correct.  If you find an error please let us know.  Also with the change in Ford part numbers in 1998 it has been difficult to keep up with the codes for all the models.

Now on to the decoding Details….. To understand the Ford Master Parts Catalog you need to have an understanding of how to decode a part number.

1940 – 1997

Please Note: The Model information in the part number may or may not be the same when looking at the fitment in the catalog.  For instance Mustang has a part number code of “Z” but a fitment code of “F”.

Base Number

The center part of the number is called the base.  13341   In the Master Parts Catalog these base numbers or organized like chapters in a book. 13341 is the basic part number and is the number for SWITCH and MOUNTING PLATE ASSY. – TURN INDICATOR.  If part of a pair, which means a left or right, then the lower number is the right hand side (i.e. 120 is right, and 121 is left).  Also the driver’s side of the car is the left side.  The only exception is power window motors for only one car.

Series means the 1000, 1001, 1999, 1A001, to 1Z999 where every basic part number is a unique part on a car, and the same part ‘name’ for a different car is differentiated by the prefix.

*Note – in the Body section the first two numbers define the body style of the car.  You need to refer to the front section of the catalog to find out this information if you do not know what your car is.

Final digits – Design Level.  On Soft trim used to define color.  A or AA first design, then AB, AC, AD, etc.  BA or CA would be a part that was the same function as the AA but slightly different

 

1998 to Present – Prefix Change
